CYP enzymes are not only the main actors in Phase I metabolism; rather, they also play a role in important biochemical pathways such as steroid biosynthesis. Recent evidence has suggested that the maternal exposure of rats to some natural substances from raspberry leaves can have longlasting effects on CYP activity in the offspring. The mechanism of this effect is unclear, but the long-term effect suggests an epigenetic basis and resembles the well-studied transgeneration effect observed with estrogenic natural compounds (see Section 5.2.4).
